Insurance coverage

Sindh government introduces insurance coverage for coal miners

The insurance mechanism will cover all expenses incurred in treating injured miners, while compensation will also be paid to the bereaved families of miners in the event of accidental death.

The insurance facility will cover approximately 1,000 miners associated with Lakhra coal mines spread over an area of approximately 13,000 acres in Jamshoro district, approximately 139 km from Karachi.

The coal miners were brought to Karachi to witness the signing ceremony held at a beachfront hotel for the launch of the insurance scheme.

The CEO of Sindh Lakhra Coal Mining Company, Khadim Hussain Channa, said health insurance coverage was provided considering the frequent accidents during mining works over the past three years.

He said the necessary emergency medical and rescue services had been launched at the mine site to deal with any eventuality.

He said special initiatives have been launched to ensure the well-being of people associated with the mining area.

Sindh Government Energy Department Secretary Abu Bakar Madni noted that workers associated with the Lakhra coalfields put their safety at risk on a daily basis when entering the coal mines to extract the valuable mineral reserve from Province.

Sindh Energy Minister Imtiaz Ahmed Sheikh said the provincial government is fully committed to the cause of the welfare and safety of coal miners, considering that a large number of these workers were from the remote hills of northern Pakistan.
