Milwaukee reckless driving victim penalized by car insurance company

MILWAUKEE – In “Project: Driver Safer,” an insurance group says everyone pays the price when there are too many reckless drivers on the road.

Milwaukee producer and director Jeffrey Cannady spends most of his days traveling to different locations around town to shoot videos for his clients and his company.

“I have to lug my gear around and I always take the downtown roads,” Cannady said.

He says this spring he was on his way to work, driving down Fond du Lac Avenue near the Milwaukee Police Department’s District 7, when he encountered a reckless driver. Cannady says he tried to avoid that driver and that’s when things got out of hand.

“They came up next to me and fired at my vehicle,” Cannady said.

Cannady reported it to Milwaukee police. They say they’re investigating and they’re still looking for a suspect. Cannady also reported it to his insurance, and he now pays a few hundred dollars more per month in insurance costs.

A bullet hole is still in Cannady’s truck following what Milwaukee police say was a road rage incident.

“I definitely reported it and my insurance skyrocketed,” Cannady said.

Angela Marion directs the Community Insurance Information Center, a Milwaukee-area nonprofit that strives to educate people about insurance and how it works.

“You crash and they take off, you’re at the mercy of your own insurance policy,” Marion said.

She says people don’t need to be driving recklessly or even being hit by a reckless driver to feel the effects. Insure.com reports that between 2020 and 2022, the average cost of car insurance in Wisconsin increased by 18%. Marion says many factors go into these increased costs.

“You have more drivers on the road, you have more accident frequency and severity,” Marion said.

These factors also include people who drive recklessly.

“It’s a huge impact with reckless driving as well as legal disputes, as well as inflation. It just drives everything up,” Marion said.

Good news if you need insurance: Wisconsin has one of the lowest rates in the country for the cost of insuring a vehicle. It ranks as the seventh lowest premium in the United States according to the Wisconsin Insurance Alliance.
